EXAMPLE
A council sold an old people's home for £50,000. The broker received a 6% commission on the sale. The amount of commission received by the broker was £3,000. Which of these items is the base, the rate, and the portion?
SOLUTION
The base is £50,000. The rate is 6%. The portion is £3,000
Finding the portion. When the base and rate are known, multiply the base by the rate to determine the portion.
Portion = Base X Rate
£3,000 = £50,000 X .06
EXAMPLE
What is 5% of £240?
SOLUTION
Portion = Base X Rate
= £240 X .05
= £12
EXAMPLE
42 is 8% of what number?
SOLUTION
Base = Portion / Rate
= 42 / .08
= 525
EXAMPLE
What % (percentage) of 670 is 134?
SOLUTION
Rate = Portion / Base
= 134 / 670
= .2
= 20%
