    ASSGINMENT ONE - DATABASE A

    2.1. PREPARE INFORMATION

    1. Select information appropriate to the task.
    2. You are going to set up a database in which to record the following items of information about the members of your class:

      Surname

      First Name

      Date of birth

      Age

      Postal code of where you live

      Religion

      Preferred career when you have finished the course

      You must first design a form in which to hold this information.

      TASK 1

      Design the form in rough on a piece of paper.

      TASK 2

      Enter the form in a computer using a word processing package so that it is easy for persons to write in by hand the information that you are collecting about them.

      TASK 3

      Circulate the form in the class so that every member of your class can enter their name in the form

      Using a suitable spreadsheet/database program set up a database and enter the information you have collected into the database. Check that you have entered your information accurately.

    2.2 PROCESS INFORMATION

    1. Find information required for the task
    2. This is your form which has been filled up by the details you have obtained from your classmates.

    3. Use appropriate software to edit information
    4. Check through your list and make sure that your class members have entered their details correctly.

    5. Process numerical information by using software to make calculations
    6. TASK 8

      a) Using a formula add up the ages of all the persons entered in your form.

      b) Using a formula find out the mean (average) of the age of your class.

    7. Reorganise information as required for the task

      Prepare the following printouts of your work:

      a) Sort the list by surname in ascending alphabetical order

      b) Sort the list by first name in ascending alphabetical order

      c) Sort the list by age in descending numerical alphabetical order

    9. Save work at appropriate intervals

    Make sure that you are saving your work. You should use the AutoSave function if possible. Make a note of the filename you are saving your work under.

    2.4 EVALUATE THE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

      Using a word processor write a short account stating why it is better to produce the work you have just carried out by using a computer. You should mention such benefits as good presentation, easy correction of data, accurate and quick calculations, different ways of sorting data without having to re-enter the data etc.
